Agents need boundaries before autonomy

Autonomy is not the first design question

The first question is what an agent is allowed to see, decide, propose, and execute. Without that contract, more autonomy only increases ambiguity. The contract's required contents are documented at governed agent boundaries.

Governed agents inherit the same brand context and access boundaries as the operator invoking them. Their work should produce inspectable inputs, proposed actions, policy results, and durable evidence. Irreversible or high-impact actions remain behind explicit approval gates.

A practical control loop

• Scope: identify the workflow, records, and brand context.
• Observe: read only the authorized operational state.
• Propose: show the action and the evidence behind it.
• Gate: apply policy and route required human approvals.
• Execute: perform only the approved bounded action.
• Record: preserve outcome, actor, policy result, and exception state.

Marketing may describe this architecture, but it is not the execution record. Operators verify live agent work, approvals, and exceptions in the authenticated console.

The goal is not an agent that appears busy. It is a system in which useful machine work can be reviewed, bounded, and trusted.
